GREETINGS & NEWS

The summer rolls on! Hope everyone is doing all that they desire. It'll be time to get back to life as we know it soon. School for the kids, regular work schedules, Nature changing and preparing for winter, new opportunities and growth for all. What are you gearing up for, what do you want to accomplish in the last quarter of 2003? Whatever it may be, take Reiki with you and if you don't have it, get it!

I suggest that you carefully read this interpretation of Reiki. I wrote a while ago and it holds very true for me:

"Reiki isn’t only a healing art, but a total enlightenment program. Reiki enhances areas such as creativity, career, relationships, enhanced learning, social projects, environmental awareness, global thinking, care giving, animal & pet care. It helps to build character and instill core values. Reiki Training is one of the best ways to be prepared for all that faces us in the 21st century."

We'll take a break from "The Wellness Corner" for this issue. As always we encourage contributors to the newsletter and have a special one this time.

info@reikihelp.com works for all correspondence.

INSPIRATION

We feature quotes from Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of Aikido which he called the Art of Peace. He was probably the world's greatest martial artist, but also a deeply spiritual and metaphysical man, both very wise and loving.

The Art of Peace is medicine for a sick world. There is evil and disorder in the world because people have forgotten that all things emanate from one source. Return to that source and leave behind all self-centered thoughts, petty desires, and anger. Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything.

GUEST ARTICLE-"Reiki for Our Non-Human Brethren"

I'm truly honored to have one of my Advanced Energy Therapist/Practitioner students contribute to this issue. Karen Maas is a certified Horsemaster, and licensed judge with the U.S. Equestrian Federation and with several breed registries. In her profession as a clinician/instructor and trainer she uses a variety of bodywork techniques to rehabilitate horses and to allow them to do their jobs in greater comfort and serenity. You may contact her through me if you need Equestrian Services.

Reiki for Our Non-Human Brethren
Part One--Horses
by Karen Mass

As an equine bodyworker, a riding instructor, and clinician, I often encounter horses that are in deep need of Reiki’s healing energies. Early in my life I found that if I could only “get my hands on” a horse, I could ease it’s pain, fear, anxiety or distress. Reiki has given me a tool that allows me to act with greater benefit to the horses that I find in need.

The uses to which mankind subjects horses often lead to their being injured on many levels. The physical body is damaged by the training techniques that are used to enforce compliance to human desires, and the subtle bodies are damaged accordingly. Many, many horses have had to learn to erect “walls” around their mental and energy bodies to prevent further damage. These walls, while protective, can also block healing.

When offering to share Reiki energy with a horse, it is important to remember that these walls are likely to be firmly in place. Because humans use their hands to harm horses as well as provide care, horses can be rightly suspicious of unusual hand and arm movements. For that reason I have found it essential to open a Reiki “field”, or create a “golden bubble” of Reiki energy, and invite the horse into it. Remember too to cleanse the space, which may contain energetic holdovers from previous occupants of that space. The horse can be invited into the energized space, or gently enfolded in it, depending on the horse’s willingness. For those who are unfamiliar with horses’ body language, signs of unwillingness include a raised rigid neck and spine, tight lips, braced ears, reluctance to make eye contact, and a restless tail. Signs of willingness include a soft and lowered neck and spine, soft licking or chewing movements of the lips and lower jaw, a release of the breath, softly alert ears, and a soft, engaging expression in the eyes. When inviting a horse into your Reiki field, use Reiki breathing. Horses, as intuitive prey animals, are very aware of the physical state of those in their presence, and can be calmed by your regulated breath.

When the horse shows it’s willingness to accept the Reiki energy and your presence in it, you may offer the horse your hands. Many horses will position their bodies so that your hands contact needy areas of the body, or will nudge your hands into position. Other times the Reiki intelligence will place your hands where they are needed. If you receive no guidance, begin by standing beside the horse’s shoulder facing in the same direction the horse is facing, and cup one hand behind one of the horse’s ears. Caution: many horses have been forcibly restrained to have their ears handled, so actually handling an ear may be perceived as a hostile action. Reaching under the junction of the head and neck, cup the other hand behind the other ear. Quietly share Reiki.

Continuing, you may map the horse’s energy body with your hands, locating defects in the energy field and corresponding physical difficulties. These may be addressed with Reiki alone, or a combination of Reiki and other modalities. A lovely closure of a session with a relaxed horse is a gentle pressure with both hands on the “energy fuses” of the forehead, located slightly above and inward from the orbits of the eyes. At closure, seal the aura, and cleanse yourself of the residue which you will have picked up.

Horses are powerful physical beings. When frightened or in pain (or through simple error) they can be capable of injuring humans. Be aware of this, and if you are not a experienced horseman, have a knowledgeable handler present for your own protection. The less restraint that can be used to allow you to work safely with the horse, the better. I prefer working in an indoor arena with no other horses present, as this gives the horse a sense of freedom of movement, while limiting distractions.

Horses do not like to be patted on the head as one would do with a dog. This is perceived as a very offensive gesture. Horses generally do like long strokes on the neck and shoulder, scratching on the withers, chest, or hip, or a companionable arm draped across the back.

Please report defects that you have found in the energy field to the horse’s handler or caregiver, as often human insight into equine body problems is faulty, and the additional information you can offer concerning the energetic defects may help with a diagnosis and treatment of a physical complaint.

Physical difficulties that have been successfully treated with Reiki include long-standing muscle spasms, hysteria, back and neck pain, and a variety of lamenesses.

SPOTLIGHT ON REIKI

Today is a special day as it is Usui Sensei's birthday. He was born August 15, 1865.

Happy Birthday dear Sensei!

Usui-san was a man who had a variety of life experiences including suffering. He also saw much suffering around him and this I believe was one major motivator in his search. With his determination, deep spirituality, intelligence and dedication he found a solution. Since that time thousands have been enabled with this teaching and energy to make tangible changes in their lives and feel the awesome power of the Universe right in their hands. Hats off to you O-Sensei!

It would be Usui-san's wish that the time around his birthday be spent sharing healing love and energy with all around us and the world at large, infusing our mass experience with spiritual vibrations. Please do provide healing at this time to all individual and world situations.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. They also believe you can produce the same effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel (called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani wheels faster increases the benefit as well.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, has said that having the mantra on your computer works the same as a traditional Mani wheel. As the digital image spins around on your hard drive, it sends the peaceful prayer of compassion to all directions and purifies the area.

Deb Platt suggests:

"To set your very own prayer wheel in motion, all you have to do is download this mantra to your computer's hard disk. Once downloaded, your hard disk drive will spin the mantra for you. Nowadays hard disk drives spin their disks somewhere between 3600 and 7200 revolutions per minute, with a typical rate of 5400 rpm. Given those rotation speeds, you'll soon be purifying loads of negative karma."

She suggests that you simply save the text "OM MANI PADME HUM," or use the Tibetan characters, which you can save by clicking on the image below, and then selecting the "Save As" option from the "File" menu in your browser:

If you use the default filename for the image file, om-mani-padma-hum.gif
you'll be storing the mantra twice.
