| | INSPIRATION
We feature quotes from Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of Aikido which he called the Art of Peace. He was probably the world's greatest martial artist, but also a deeply spiritual and metaphysical man, both very wise and loving.
Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life. Breathe in and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breathe out and bring the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself. | | Back to top |
| | THE WELLNESS CORNER--Tips to improve quality of life
The Wellness Corner will be a regular feature of our Newsletter, where we will dedicate it to a certain subject for one or more issues. All subjects will be common elements of everyday living and deal with how to improve the quality of our lives. Energizing Through Meal Planning by Julianne Koritz
Many people suffer from energy slumps in the mid-morning or afternoon not realizing their food intake may be to blame. Changing meal times, as well as the size, color, and texture of your food can vastly improve your energy level and overall health. Meal planning is an important step in energizing your body and creating a healthier body, a healthier you! Consider meal planning that incorporates the following:
Meal Planning Tip #1 Eat 4-6 small meals containing about 500 calories each, including dinner. Begin to eat more often, but less food at each meal. This is the most important way to increase your energy level.
Meal Planning Tip #2 Each meal should be made up of at least two different food groups to offer a variety of nutrients and be satisfying but not make you feel stuffed. More variety in your daily food intake increases nutrients that benefit your health.
Meal Planning Tip #3 Each meal should not be more than four hours apart to help control blood sugars and hunger level. Eating small meals more often helps control your blood glucose levels. Blood glucose levels become too high when we eat very large portions of food at one time.
Conversely, the blood glucose levels become too low when there is longer than 3 hours between meals. The blood glucose levels are controlled by insulin, which is released from the pancreas.
Insulin is increased after a meal to take glucose to the brain for energy, to the liver or muscles to be stored as glycogen and any extra stored as adipose (fat) tissue. Small meals help keep your blood glucose levels more consistent.
Meal Planning Tip #4 Make a written plan of your menus and snacks; then stick to it. Write down a list of all the dinners you currently make at home. Now, write down what you eat for breakfast, lunch and snacks. Review this list and choose what you are to eat on a daily basis as you prepare your weekly menu.
Here are some meal planning suggestions for the week:
Breakfast Whole wheat English muffin with peanut butter and orange juice OR Oatmeal with fruit or raisins and OJ OR Low fat yogurt and granola with fruit
You don't need to eat something different for breakfast every day, just eat a meal that's nutritious, simple, and tasty - not overwhelming. Avoid convenience foods such as donuts, cookies, and breakfast treats. Complex starches that include fiber, B-vitamins, iron and calcium are the best foods in the morning.
Lunch Lentil soup/crackers/apple OR Tofu enchiladas/salad/orange OR Yogurt/granola/blueberry OR Tuna fish sandwich on whole wheat bread/apple OR Pasta salad/fruit smoothie (small)
Lunch can be leftovers from dinner. Preparing enough food the night before saves time and money. If you get into the routine of eating 500 calories per meal and fewer calories for snacks, then having leftovers works to control your caloric intake and is a good way not to over eat tomorrow.
Lunch should have some protein source. Instead of cold cuts, try beans, lentils, tofu, cheeses, and/or yogurt to increase the energy level in your blood.
Snacks: Fresh fruit, yogurt, nuts, cheese and crackers
Avoid caffeine, sodas, candy or any sweets as "pick me ups" during mid-morning or mid-afternoon slumps. Avoid foods of high glycemic index: white breads, cookies, doughnuts, and foods from vending machines. This only serves to perpetuate the cycle of daily energy slumps.
Dinner Tofu enchiladas/salad OR Spaghetti & marinara sauce/whole grain bread/broccoli OR Rice and Beans with avocado slices on top/fresh green beans OR Grilled tuna/mango salsa/couscous OR Tofu & vegetable stir fry/short grain brown rice
Front Loading ~ It is important to eat breakfast every morning to give your body an energy boost after essentially fasting through the night. Many people are running on empty when they don't eat breakfast in the morning and have a huge loss of energy by mid-morning. Some people mask this energy loss by drinking coffee. I enjoy coffee too, however, caffeine is not a nutrient you need in the morning.
Some Final Thoughts on Meal Planning Dinners may be more difficult to change since most people sit down to a large meal at night. But remember, you are working towards changing both your appetite and your eating habits by eating 4-6 small meals daily. So, if you had a snack or small meal right after work, your appetite will not be as great at dinnertime, however, your desire to eat a large meal will be present due to habit. So by preplanning what you will eat for your meals will help control the amount of food eaten at meal times.
Remember to concentrate on implementing meal habit changes one day at a time. You will soon see that the days add up to new eating habits and a healthier attitude towards nutrition and food. You will also one day realize that you no longer have those mid-morning or mid-afternoon slumps. In fact, you are energized and full of vim and vigor!

| | "Reiki for Our Non-Human Brethren" Part II Mr. Bill, a wise and venerable elderly Siamese gentleman, gave me another lesson in Reiki for cats yesterday. He told me that static or standing energy fields are not especially comfortable for cats, that energy channeling is most comfortable combined with skin sensations. Yes, stroking! Or rubbing, or drawing symbols are preferable to immobile hands and energy. While the palm chakras are energized, the fingertips and arms can be engaged in stroking. Because my first energy teachers were fur persons, and because my primary healing training was in massage, Pamir had a difficult time in my Reiki I training getting me to stop “doing” something, and to just allow the wind of Reiki to blow through me.Cats speak the language of energy as a first language, and cats know universal power intimately. That may well be one of the reasons that many humans find feline company and presence so comfortable and comforting. That may also account for the reverse; in many cultures cats are feared as intermediaries of the spirit world, or venerated as living deities. Punkin, one of the seven Siamese cats that shares our home with us is a powerful energy healer. Her healing abilities and empathy have earned her the nickname of “Nurse Kitty”. Punkin can create a healing field so strong that it is palpable even to people who have no claim to sensitivity. Her work of choice is the heart chakra. She carefully places her own heart chakra over the heart chakra of her “patient”, settles down and proceeds to spread an umbrella of shining energy over the patient. Punkin also specializes in lymphatic system cleansing. We laugh about the “laying on of paws”, but to Punky it is no joke, but is real medicine. While some cats project healing others are strong receivers, and nearly “pull” an energy connection from their intended persons. When using Reiki healing with horses, structural injuries and emotional trauma are often the targets. I find that more often with dogs and cats Reiki is directed to internal physical problems of organs or systems. This may be due to the types of horses I work on and their occupations; they run and jump carrying weight. The dogs and cats I work on are companion animals not engaged in physical work. Fortunately for me I usually have my hands on loved and loving pets rather than abused and frightened orphans. Dogs seem to be less energetically empowered than cats, and seem to be receptive to more quiet, less active forms of energy therapy. Simply holding a dog’s head in your Reiki hands can be a strong healing and communion. As with horses, animals that have been hurt or frightened may have strong defenses in place, and may unintentionally cause harm to a Reiki practitioner who is trying to aid them. It is always wise to energize your hands and “offer” them to the being you wish to share Reiki with, and give that fur person a chance to enter into your energy field on its own terms and in its own time. Forcing contact on a fearful animal is a recipe for trouble. Wait. Cats and dogs don't usually comprehend time as we relate to it. For most animals there is only “Now”, and “Not Now”. Until “Now” is, waiting must be. When the fur person enters into your Reiki field, or allows you to enfold it in your energy, allow the Reiki intelligence to direct your hands, bearing in mind the fact that skin sensation may be needed to comfort many cats and some dogs. Ruffling the fur gently, stroking, or small circular movements of the fingertips can be very soothing and invite acceptance. Many will assertively position their bodies to direct the energy as they wish. Sharing Reiki with unborn infants is a powerful and humbling experience. I have shared Reiki with pregnant cats, dogs, and horses, and have felt a very strong sense of the presence of the unborn within. Wonderfully, when these individuals are born into this life, we recognize one another from our pre-natal Reiki contact. I have often gotten clear knowledge of gender, colors and markings of the infants. Sometimes, while sharing Reiki with a fur person, I receive very clear pictures or messages (like Mr. Bill’s recent Reiki lesson). Sometimes this “knowingness” is an awareness of the nature of an illness or a systemic disruption. Often it is a knowingness concerning vitamin or mineral deficiencies such as anemia, or the presence of an infective agent. On some occasions it will be a memory of an injury. This awareness can be communicated with the fur person’s caregiver so that action can be taken medically or nutritionally. Reiki with our fur bearing brethren can be a learning, healing, sharing, and a teaching. They give as much as we give--the energy is circular. | | SPOTLIGHT ON REIKI
I was so struck by Morihei Ueshiba's quote above. As we know he was a contemporary of Usui-san, yet when an essential truth is stated, it resounds across cultures and eras and various schools of thought. What is really interesting about this quote is the reference to breath. This isn't just the breath of oxygenating and decarbonizing our bodies, but breath as a sacred act that lets life circulate through us. It also directly links to some of Usui-san's recommended Reiki practices (Hikari no Kokyu-ho; Gassho Kokyu-ho ; and Hatsurei-ho). Breathing is one major way that we 'energize' the body. This energy we speak of is Ki or Prana, the basic building block of life. Ki is our link to the cosmos and nature, as well as health and success. It is the one cord that unifies us with all of life. We are basically swimming in Ki all the time. We are carried along by the cosmos and we carry the cosmos within us. We stand on the Earth and it blends with us with every necessary act of staying alive. Yet with all of our built-in potential, how many of us can truly feel spiritual energy, lifeforce, the energy behind each mindbody distortion, the energy behind each conflict? Do we understand energy, so seduced by the physical world and the senses we've been given to interpret it? Lifeforce is universal and in everything. However, can we see it, hold it, play with it or are we stuck in traffic, worried about finances, preoccupied with anger or grief? It's curious that with even quantum physics verifying the primacy of "energy" in creation, standard healthcare doesn't acknowledge or address this aspect of our being. Reiki offers a direct link to starting and growing an energetic relationship with yourself in the deepest, most meaningful sense. Client after client has reported how amazingly restorative treatments are. Valuable inner connections are made. Reiki really helps one to make the changes needed for optimal living. The immediate effect is of deep relaxation. Common sensations and perceptions are healing warmth, pleasant tingling or rushes, feelings of love and bliss. Self-awareness, release, balance, cellular regeneration, cleansing, rejuvenation, creative inspiration, transcendence, spiritual connection and insight are some examples of cumulative effects. For students of Reiki it is the same, except that this interaction with universal energy becomes a personal practice, taking it to a much more profound level. Those of us who interact daily with spiritual energy know how invaluable this aspect of our being is. We also know that the care of our energetic self is vitally important to life in the early 21st century. It isn't exactly the easiest time in history, but there is something you can do about it. Won't you join the fold? | | Back to top | ©

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying
the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of
Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. They also believe you can produce the same
effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel
(called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be
multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani
wheels faster increases the benefit as well.
His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, has said that
having the mantra on your computer works the same as a traditional Mani wheel.
As the digital image spins around on your hard drive, it sends the peaceful
prayer of compassion to all directions and purifies the area.
Deb Platt suggests:
"To set your very own prayer
wheel in motion, all you have to do is download this mantra to your
computer's hard disk. Once downloaded, your hard disk drive will spin the
mantra for you. Nowadays hard disk drives spin their disks somewhere
between 3600 and 7200 revolutions per minute, with a typical rate of 5400
rpm. Given those rotation speeds, you'll soon be purifying loads of
negative karma."
She suggests that you simply save the
text "OM MANI PADME HUM," or use the Tibetan characters, which
you can save by clicking on the image below, and then selecting the
"Save As" option from the "File" menu in your browser:
If you use the default filename for
the image file, om-mani-padma-hum.gif,
you'll be storing the mantra twice. Simply right click and save.
