GREETINGS & NEWS

Having just experienced the Venus Transit (6/8/04), I hope that the summer is productive and joyous for you. Venus Transits always come in pairs, eight years minus two days apart, approximately every 121 years. It is a six-to-seven hour process in which the planet Venus cuts a swath across the face of the Sun, transiting between the Sun and the Earth.

Communications Breakthrough Potential
In the past it seems to have signaled a tremendous breakthrough in communication or an advancement that altered worldviews. Magellan planned his around the world passage during a Venus Transit, which ultimately proved the world was not flat. Postal systems were first inaugurated during Venus Transits, advancing mass communication. The first astronomical worldwide scientific experiment, based on viewing the eclipse of Venus from many vantage points around the world occurred during the Transit itself. The Suffragette Movement emerged as a force during the last Venus Transit.

The Return of the Sacred Feminine
Some are saying this Venus Transit, will herald another shift in the Return of the Sacred Feminine and the characteristics implied; integrity, truth, balance, harmony, love, intuition. Some observers also speculate that the Transit will bring an increase in collective telepathy. They say that such a massive increase in human telepathy could bring governmental and corporate institutions to their knees since lying to the public would not be possible. No one really knows, yet, what the effects of the Transit will be, but it is being viewed by many, as highly significant at this time in our collective history.

To a world dancing ever closer to mass destruction, this Transit is being viewed with increasing interest by many around the world. Interestingly, some commentators on this Transit see associations with the feminine-based goddesses of ancient times including Isis, Hator, Mary Magdalen, Kuan Yin, and Tara, as well as White Buffalo Calf Woman.

Indeed, at a mythic level, we could speculate that this Venus Transit is a portal, or an opening, for those who feel a calling to honor the feminine and to engage in her restoration in balance to the male principle, which is so over-dominating the world. Returning to the mythic for a moment, the disenfranchisement of the feminine principle has left the male principle bereft and impoverished, though he does not suspect this.

Without the balancing effect of the feminine in relation to the male principle, our culture has become divorced from wisdom and an interconnectedness with life. And thus, at this level of collective myth, the upcoming Transit can be viewed as an opportunity to reconnect collectively with the inherent creative potency of the feminine principle (as the Creatrix or goddess/creative power) to re-create our collective destiny.

Summer Solstice

This important time falls on Sunday, June 20 this year. It's the longest day of the year, when the greatest amount of light manifests.

Quite some years ago I wrote a guided meditation for the Summer Solstice, in which the spirit of Mother Earth came in very powerfully at the end. In part She said:

"You are a beloved being. Your life and mine are the same. Your welfare and mine are the same. What is good for you is good for me. When you feel love I feel love. So won’t you share your goodwill with others? Won’t you share your goodwill with the planet? Won’t you share your goodwill with yourself?"

INSPIRATION

We feature quotes from Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), the founder of Aikido which he called the Art of Peace. He was probably the world's greatest martial artist, but also a deeply spiritual and metaphysical man, both very wise and loving.
Your spirit is the true shield.

BOOK REVIEW -- "The Reiki Sourcebook"

The Reiki Sourcebook
by Bronwen & Frans Stiene
Review by Pamir Kiciman

For the longest time, I had stopped reading books on Reiki, basically because there was nothing new that was offered and there were holes in the information. Instead I invested in updating my own training and learning, aligning myself more closely with Usui Sensei's emphasis on spiritual development, which leads to healing.

When Bronwen & Frans asked me to review their book for this newsletter, I gladly accepted for I knew they'd been doing the same.

The Reiki Sourcebook accomplishes much. As always, it doesn't replace proper training with a qualified Reiki Master, but this book will satisfy anyone from novice to master. For me, it's most important contribution is to get as close as we possibly can, with the information we currently have, to Usui the man and Usui the seeker and teacher.

What has emerged in the world of Reiki is that rather than Reiki only being a hands-on healing art, with little or no other choice in its application, it's actually rooted in the principles of our wisdom traditions and is primarily a teaching which leads to spiritual liberation.

To my mind, Reiki is also an incredible system of education about what I call "energetic integrity." The understanding of energy isn't taught at all in the normal avenues of our schooling. For mental and emotional wellness there's psychotherapy and other systems of help; physical wellness can be found through allopathic or natural medicine, but what about energetic wellness?

Considering that our "energy body" underlies all other aspects of our existence, it's really important to learn about it. All of Usui's teachings and the other Japanese Reiki techniques outlined in The Reiki Sourcebook, if sincerely practiced can lead to "energetic wisdom" which in turn will improve and enhance every aspect of our lives.

Bronwen and Frans also do a great job of clarifying Japanese culture, spirituality, the intricacies of its language and other similar teachings that were around at Usui's time, creating a solid picture of the source for Usui's teachings.

There's also good information here for the newcomer, what to expect, the nature of Reiki treatments and training, and some scientific research on Reiki. To complete the development of Reiki since Usui's time, both Reiki in Japan, and Western Reiki with it's many branches and techniques are also included.

There's a lot more in The Reiki Sourcebook, including a glossary and I highly recommend it.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. They also believe you can produce the same effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel (called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani wheels faster increases the benefit as well.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, has said that having the mantra on your computer works the same as a traditional Mani wheel. As the digital image spins around on your hard drive, it sends the peaceful prayer of compassion to all directions and purifies the area.

Deb Platt suggests:

"To set your very own prayer wheel in motion, all you have to do is download this mantra to your computer's hard disk. Once downloaded, your hard disk drive will spin the mantra for you. Nowadays hard disk drives spin their disks somewhere between 3600 and 7200 revolutions per minute, with a typical rate of 5400 rpm. Given those rotation speeds, you'll soon be purifying loads of negative karma."

She suggests that you simply save the text "OM MANI PADME HUM," or use the Tibetan characters, which you can save by clicking on the image below, and then selecting the "Save As" option from the "File" menu in your browser:

If you use the default filename for the image file, om-mani-padma-hum.gif
you'll be storing the mantra twice.
