I feel that time travel is a mechanistic model based on the ego's desires. It's certainly fascinating, could be useful and is possible. Spiritually I don't know what its value is, however.

We travel all the time in inner experiences, and time isn't a factor. There are many reports from well-respected masters such as Paramahansa Yogananda that the perceptions of our physical senses are limited. In his "Autobiography of a Yogi" he tells of a great master, Mahavatar Babaji, who has lived in a youthful body for 100s of years.

Yogananda's own teacher, Sri Yukteswar, visits him after his own death in a flesh body. Yukteswar recounts many deep truths, including how there's a physical universe, but also an astral and causal one too, each one subtler.

And we think the known universe is endless! None of this is all that important to the task at hand. We're here to better ourselves. Wisdom is timeless. Time travel or resurrection is a power, not a plaything.

The knowing that time is a human construct is spiritually helpful and that's all I wanted to say in the post. This is going to be a series and the next part is coming up shortly.

Hi Kay,

Your comment came at a very interesting moment! As I was exercising this morning, I was watching this week's episode of Fringe which was all about traveling between universes. The main scientist built this 'window' that looked into an alternate earth. It was just like in the Introductory chapter of the Lotus Sutra (chapter 1) where Shakyamuni illuminates an uncountable number of universes in the east for his students to see. When I lecture on this chapter, I always use the example of imagining a wall of LCD TVs, each one tuned to a different universe.

Later in the show, the assistant quotes Robert Oppenheimer, saying something about "Destroyer of Worlds". I haven't done the research on that quote yet, but in Chapter 5 of the Lotus Sutra ('The Parable of the Medicinal Herbs'), a paragraph begins "The Dharma King, destroyer of being".

I had just finished meditating on this phrase when I read your comment! While I am going to write this up in detail and post on my blog, let me just share with you that the phrase is basically saying that we, as Buddhas ourselves, posses at every moment both the reality of non-existence and the reality of life. We shouldn't see them as 2 distinct realities but that both exist at all times! This realization is enlightenment itself and from this perspective we can live life to the fullest as Buddhas of Absolute Freedom.

So, yes, I think we can travel to different times and universes because I believe that they all exist in this moment. We just have to figure out how to do what the Buddha showed us. The reason solid physics (not quantum physics) says it's impossible is because, like you said, of the energy issue. Since e=mc2, even if you could produce the energy needed, it would make the mass of the object that the energy was applied to, so big that it would be bigger than the universe itself. Since energy is contained in the universe, how could the object then be bigger? Also, as the object's mass increases, it needs even more energy to remain at the same speed, much less make it go faster. You simply run out of energy before reaching the required speed.

I have always felt that if a quantum physicist were to chant Nam Myoho Renge Kyo (the title of The Lotus Sutra), they would be able to develop time machines.

Have a great day,

Ned

These are very comforting theories. Very liberating.

So what do you think about time travel?

Quantum physics says it's possible. with just the right amount of energy, which due to new kinds of nuclear reactors and maybe this anti matter techno,is likely to happen. But biology says our bodies can't do it, unless we can withstand extreme heat and cold.

So, do you think H.G. Well's fiction can be a reality?

I would really appreciateyour views on this matter.

Thanks in advance.

With respect to both science and spirituality,

Quite true and thanks for the observations. Time, as the fourth dimension, is relative to the individual, nothing else. That was the breakthrough discovery of Einstein's General Relativity.

He wasn't the first. The Buddha Shakyamuni, 3,000 years ago, said that all of time exists within the single moment and, in a single moment, stretches to the infinite past and the infinite future. To see it any other way is an illusion. The sage Nichiren called this the realm of the 9th Consciousness.

Another theory of time, held to by both Einstein and Newton and discussed in length in Hawking's A Brief History of Time, is that time has to be linear, from past to present. But in a recent article in Discover magazine, quantum physicists are now proving that future events actually change past and present events. Therefore, time is not linear, exactly what the Buddha taught us.

Namaste,

Ned

Thanks for stopping by Viviana. That's a really great attitude you have. Another way I like to think about is in terms of "parallel tracks." Yeah, there's this & this going on one track, but on all these other tracks beautiful things are happening and being experienced. Love to you as well...

I completely agree. Right now, for instance, as I'm experiencing strange symptoms of a yet to be diagnosed (by traditional medicine) condition, I keep reminding myself that what's happening is something that is being experienced by only one of my aspects: the physical aspect I now find myself expressing mySelf with. Temporarily. Yes, that word says it all: temporarily. For the time being. Time which doesn't even exist in the larger scheme of infinity and eternity. So, no worries. I'm just focusing on each moment and living life to the fullest. Tastes, sounds, sights, the touch of my little boys' sweet face against my cheeks. Divine! What's to fear? What's not to like? Nothing at all. All is well. Always.

Love and Light,
